UCC1 Universal CMM controller

The UCC1 universal CMM controller is the central element of Renishaw's probing systems. It controls the motion of the CMM whilst it performs high speed scanning and discrete point measurement routines. In addition, it interfaces Renishaw heads and probes, enabling tight integration of sensors with the machine, shaving seconds of measurement cycle times.

Key design characteristics of the UCC1 universal CMM controller are as follows:

•  Technical characteristics:

•  Three modes of operation - touch-trigger, scanning and digitizing - in a single CMM controller.

•  Tight integration of machine, head and sensor control for high speed, accurate measurement.

•  High speed scanning at up to 500 points per second.

•  Renishaw's unique Renscan DC™ is a standard feature of the UCC1 controller, enabling high speed scanning with similar accuracy to low speed scans.

•  Modular design featuring a motherboard with interfacing for touch-trigger and scanning probe, plus machine encoders and I/O.

•  Optional extra modules provides as 'daughter' cards including: PH10, PHS1, I/O for temperature compensation and the OTM3M optical scanning sensor. Extra scales and I/O are also available.

•  Renishaw has 10 years of experience in scanning - knowledge that is encapsulated in the robust scanning algorithms that feature efficient data capture, data filtering and surface recovery.

•  Unique adaptive scanning routines predict surface curvature from recent measurement readings for faster scanning that is able to cope with surface irregularities.

•  Advanced CMM motion control featuring velocity feed forward and acceleration feedback.

•  A dynamic integrator that allows fast and accurate approaches to target positions without over-running, reducing measurement cycle times.

•  An innovative parabolic filter to smooth surface data and to eliminate the effects of high frequency mechanical noise.

•  Calibration and compensation methods for each sensor are optimized, ensuring optimum measurement accuracy.

•  UCC1 is connected to the front end PC via an optical link that provides excellent EMC immunity for robust operation.

•  UCC software is provided as COM objects for easy integration with front-end control software.

Commercial factors:

•  An integrated solution with all machine, head and sensor control in one unit.

•  Future proof - all new Renishaw heads and sensors will be designed to work with UCC1, making them 'plug and play'.

•  An easy upgrade path for users who want to increase the capability of their CMMs in the future.

•  As with all Renishaw products, responsive and cost-effective support and service is available, minimizing your downtime and lifetime costs.

SPA1
The design of the SPA1 has been optimized to work with the UCC1 CMM controller.

The 3-channel SPA1 has individual controls for offset, gain, derivative and proportional settings. The power supply can be set to provide 24 V or 48 V, the maximum total output current is 10 A and each individual channel can deliver 10 A peak (for 2 seconds) or 7A continuous. There are selectable chokes fitted to accommodate low inductance motors.

Enhance the performance of your CMM with the ultimate in motion control

Renishaw's UCC universal CMM controller optimizes the CMM / probe interface for maximum part checking speed and accuracy. Ideal for OEM and retrofit applications on a wide variety of CMM's , the flexible controller allows CMM's to operate in three modes:

1. Standard touch-trigger for kinematics and precision touch trigger probes

2. Digitizing with analogue probes.
3. Full-high-speed scanning both with analogue probes.

The controller includes advanced scanning algorithms, which allow fast accurate adaptive part scanning at velocities limited only by the dynamic performance of the CMM. Using UCC, speeds in excess of 300 mm/sec can be achieved.

The UCC's scanning performance has been further enhanced with the introduction of Renscan DC. Renscan DC allows the UCC to perform high speed scanning with high accuracy by learning the inaccuracies introduced whilst moving CMM's at higher speeds, and then dynamically compensating for them.

Two powerful new peripheral products MCU1 and SPA2 will ease the retrofit of UCC to existing CMM's, allowing the controller to be fitted to an even wider range of machines, including many not originally equipped with Renishaw's probe systems.

The new MCU1 joystick controls the CMM axes and motorized probe head. Featuring a LCD display and PC mouse control for ease of use, the MCU1 has enhanced appeal to software developers with its custom menu system.

To ease the correct selection of power amplifier when fitting the UCC, Renishaw is also introducing the SPA1 (servo power amplifier), a simple 'off-the-shelf' solution with an output power of 600 watts and a maximum of 380 watts from any individual channel.

The UCC supports a complete range of CMM probe systems, including conventional touch-trigger; strain gauge and laser probes; manual and motorized probe heads; probe and stylus changers. Various other optical and video probes are also supported.

The electronics are housed in a 19” IP54 cabinet that protects against airborne ingress and moisture.

Renishaw 0.001mm RG scaling is utilized on the X, Y and Z-axes.

UCC2 Universal CMM controller

The UCC2 offers full 4-axis control and a scanning capability that provides a choice of scanning techniques:

Known part adaptive scanning, with sophisticated scanning routines that include cylinder scan, gasket scans, grid scans, automatic find center, advanced data filtering and advanced analogue probe calibration.

The technical specification includes the following features:

•  4-axis control.

•  Scale inputs: Renishaw RGH22, RGH24, RGH41 and other digital scales are directly supported. Analogue scales can be supported via an external interface.

•  Uncommitted binary I/O: 6 inputs and 7 outputs available as standard.

•  Comprehensive joystick interface.

•  TP20, TP200/SCR200, SP600 and SP25M interfaces available as standard.

•  19" 3U rack-mountable enclosure with 5 expansion slots for option cards and a 6th expansion slot that conforms to the PCI specification.

•  Simple Ethernet link to the PC via a crossover LAN cable.

•  Internal error map.

The UCC2 has a range of compatible additional card options. Most of these cards are common with UCC1, the exceptions being the PHS1 card, which is UCC2 compatible only, and the SP25M and MCU1 cards, which are included in the motherboard of the UCC2.

The additional card options for UCC2 are:

•  PICS/RS232

•  PH10 motorized head interface

•  SP80 probe interface card

•  Additional axis

•  Temperature sensor card

SPA2
The design of the SPA2 has been optimized to work with the UCC2 CMM controller.

The SPA2 is a 4-channel digital servo power amplifier with an integral power supply. When the SPA2 is used with the UCC2 controller and MCU1 joystick, you have an ideal retrofit package.

For each amplifier channel, there are individual software controls for all the tuning parameters including offset, gain, integral and proportional settings. The motor and tacho polarities can also be inverted by software.

The power supply can be set to provide a voltage output from 12 V to 60 V. the maximum total output power is 600W and each channel can deliver 10 A peak or 5 A continuous.

As well as the servo power amplifiers, the unit contains all the relays to control the motor engaging process. It also contains all the necessary hardware to implement a category '2' emergency stop system.

There are various kits available depending on the application. The basic SPA2 kit part number is given below. Please contact your local Renishaw supplier for information about other kit options.
